Omaha: Do you really need a diaper bag?

If you’re a fairly minimalist parent in Omaha, you might be wondering if you really need a diaper bag. After all, your house is already overflowing with baby must-haves and nursery gear. Can’t you just use a regular diaper bag for your trips out of the house? 

Whilst technically, yes, you could use a regular bag, a diaper bag is specifically designed for your and your baby's needs. It’s the perfect place to store everything you need whilst also giving you a quick way to access everything in an emergency (read: diaper explosion).

What’s the difference between a diaper bag and a regular bag? 

Whilst both diaper bags and regular bags both have separate compartments, the compartments within a diaper bag are designed specifically to hold your baby items. Diaper bags contain compartments for bottles, wipes, and your diaper bag, as well as a small space for you to keep your personal belongings. 

Diaper bags also tend to have more versatile handles so that you can wear or carry your bag in several different ways. Generally, they’re also fairly gender-neutral. 

In general, diaper bags are made from fabric that’s safe for the washing machine or easy to wipe clean. And with all of the messes about to come your way, this is probably something you’ll want to consider. You wouldn’t want to ruin your favorite regular bag with milk, snacks, and poopy diapers! 

Can I use a regular bag as a diaper bag? 

A large regular bag can be used as a diaper bag, but you won’t have the same ease of use.

When changing your baby’s diaper outside the house, you’re going to want a bag with separate pockets that are easy and fast to access so that you can continue to do mum life one-handed! There’s nothing worse than having to dig into the corners of a bag looking for the spare onesie that you’re sureyou packed. 

How long will I use a diaper bag? 

Your diaper bag is likely to be a staple in your life until your baby is out of diapers and no longer having accidents. Once your baby doesn’t need diapers or spare clothes, you might like to downsize to a bag that’s big enough for the necessities (and snacks!). 

With that in mind, you’ll likely use your diaper bag for at least 2 years. 

Which diaper bag should I buy? 

Choosing a diaper bag depends on your needs and style! When choosing a diaper bag, you’ll want to consider how many children you’ll need to pack for (including if you have older children who are still in diapers), whether you need space for bottles, and the season! 

Newborns need more items than older babies. For babies born in winter (when thicker clothes and blankets are needed!) you might want to consider a diaper bag with a bit more space.
